Insider Preview build 17101

On Wednesday, Microsoft released Insider Preview build 17101 to the fast ring. This build is important because it is the first of the Redstone 4 "release branch" builds, as Microsoft ready their Windows 10 builds for public release. Read on to find out what's new...

Apart from the obvious (being rs4_release rather than rs4_development), this build introduces quite a few new features.

The first of these are... emojis. Yes, really. Apparently these are a major OS feature now! That's it; I don't intend to mention more about them.

Far more interesting are the changes which have happened to Windows Universal App file permissions. It is now far easier (and more granular) to decide what file system permissions a UWP app can have, thus determining what it can access. As Microsoft say:

With this build we’re giving you more control so you can now decide which UWP apps can access your full file system. Particular UWP apps will be granted permission to have broad file system access. This capability will be granted on a per app basis by Microsoft. If a UWP app has the broad file system access restricted capability, you will receive a consent dialog prompting you to accept or deny the request. If at any time you change your mind about the decision, you can go to Settings > Privacy where you’ll find a new Settings page for File System Access. On this page, you can turn access on or off globally, and if it’s on you can also turn it on or off for each app that has requested the capability. UWPs with broad file system access will not appear in the Photos, Videos, or Documents privacy settings pages. If you grant broad file system access, this includes Photos, Videos and Documents.

In addition to this, there's some "productivity" changes to Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, which basically means MS have stopped bundling all the Candy Crush crap on that particular SKU and instead installed some useful apps; and finally, there's a new power plan setting for Workstations called "Ultimate Performance" which, um... gives you ultimate performance on that hardware.

As ever, the full release notes are available here.

    • Price is the most important factor, you would considering while buying a smartphone. Not everyone could afford an iPhone. So, Xiaomi gives foremost importance to the pricing of its devices. Even its latest flagship smartphone Xiaomi Mi5 with premium features just costs under $400 (INR 25,000).
    • this is new to the market, and there are not much content on the internet.

    • Hello  everyone, I joined the forum, because i need your expert opinion.

      I am looking for Cat S41 alternate. I liked Cat S41, but i can't pay $350+.
after searched, i found Poptel P9000 Max.
i like it because of 9000mAh battery with quick charger, 13mp back camera, 4 LED light for Torch, and IP68 Rating.

      I need your suggestion.

      thanks in advance
    • If you're having to write content regularly then I'd always say keyboard is king, and the better the keyboard, the easier to write
    • I’m torn between getting the latest Ipad or buying a notebook for myself. I’m a freelance web content writer and most of the time I’m always travelling. I guess you could consider me as a digital nomad. I already have a Macbook but sometimes it feels so inconvenient to bring it around. I always have to use bigger backpack so I could carry it with me when travelling.  I’m going away to a Ukraine ski trip this coming winter. I wanted to bring something smaller where I could write whenever. Any suggestions or comments from the people on the internet?
